| www.lindamoodbell.com Approximately sixty percent of the students who receive instruction at Lindamood-Bell® Learning Centers, report to us that they have a prior diagnosis, such as ADD or ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexic, CAPD, Non-Verbal LD, etc. Lindamood-Bell does not specifically diagnose or label any learning disabilities or neurological disorders. Our records merely reflect the information self-reported by the students/responsible parties.
Of those students who report a previously diagnosed learning disability or disorder, about 18% are within the definition of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). We do not request that our students distinguish between Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD, AD/HD, ADDH).
Given that Lindamood-Bell does not specifically test for, nor diagnose any of these disorders on the ADD/ADHD spectrum, we do not have verification of these self-reported diagnoses, nor are we a specific ADD therapy. However, by looking closely at the standardized assessments that are administered to all students, the results do indicate similar processing strengths and weaknesses for students with similar diagnoses. Results of our work with these students can be found in our Learning Center Clinical Stats report (link here). It is also important to understand that a large number of our students self-report multiple diagnoses. For example we have students report that they have been diagnosed with an attention disorder and Dyslexia.
Of the students we’ve seen who report a diagnosis of an attention deficit or hyperactivity disorder, our records indicate that the average age is 11.6 years old, ranging from 6 to 17 years old, and approximately 65% are males. We do provide instruction for adults with ADHD and ADD (individuals older then 17), however the overall number of adult students is significantly lower. The average hours of instruction for children with ADD or children with ADHD is 127 intensive hours (intensive instruction is 5 days a week, two-six hours per day).
Most of the students previously diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, receive instruction for a combination of decoding (reading) and comprehension development, approximately 37%. This compared to the students with a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD that have strictly received decoding instruction, about 35%, and those who have received strictly comprehension instruction, about 28%. This type of instruction is not a specific treatment for ADHD, rather this represents those that give us the information about prior ADHD testing or an ADHD symptom.
There continues to be many debates on the value/need of medical treatment for ADHD or ADD, including medication for ADHD and ADD, such as Ritalin or Concerta. Lindamood-Bell is not a medical facility and therefore does not have a position for or against recommendations made by medical professionals for ADD drugs, ADHD drugs, ADD diet, or ADHD natural remedies. Not all students with an ADD diagnosis (and/or ADHD diagnosis) are ideal candidates for our instruction. Our testing battery is a comprehensive array of assessments and is the critical first step to determine if our instructional methods are appropriate for each individual, regardless of any prior diagnoses they may have. Through our extensive evaluation, we can determine if a child or adult with a deficit disorder will benefit from our instruction.
